An Oro Valley man was indicted earlier this month in the November drowning of his year-old son.

Jesse Martinez, 30, was indicted Jan. 15 by a Pima County grand jury, according to information released by Lt. Kara Riley, spokeswoman for the Oro Valley Police Department. He was charged with one count each of negligent homicide and child abuse.

Paramedics were called to a home in the 9000 block of North Oracle Road, between Hardy Road and Calle Concordia, at about 5 p.m. Nov. 2.

They performed CPR on Michael Martinez, who was found unresponsive in a bathtub, Capt. Josh Hurguy, a spokesman for the Golder Ranch Fire Department, said at the time of the incident. The child was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation by Oro Valley detectives revealed that Jesse Martinez had put the baby in the tub with his 4-year-old sibling and left them alone for about 45 minutes, Riley said.

When Martinez returned to the bathroom and found Michael unresponsive, he called 911.

Martinez previously served time in prison for aggravated assault and burglary. He was released in 2006.
