An armed-robbery suspect was killed and another was injured in a shootout with a Pinal County sheriff’s deputy Monday.
The incident started about 6:30 a.m. when two armed men entered the M Passion Adult Boutique near Picacho Peak and tied up a female employee in the back room, Tim Gaffney, a Pinal County Sheriff’s Office spokesman, said in a news release.
The woman escaped and called 911 as the robbers fled, the release said. The robbers left with the safe.
A few minutes later deputies saw a car — an Audi — in the area of the robbery speeding westbound on Interstate 10 and tried to stop the vehicle, the release said.
The car’s driver wouldn’t stop though, and deputies began chasing the vehicle. During the pursuit, the Audi reached speeds of up to 120 mph, authorities said.
The car exited I-10 onto Arizona 87, pulled into a dirt field and collided with a deputy’s vehicle, the release said.
Two men got out of the car and begin firing at the deputy who shot back.
One man was shot and later pronounced dead at the scene, and the other man was shot in the arm and leg.
The injured man tried to flee but was caught. The man fought with the deputy as he tried to place him under arrest, the release said.
The deputy, a seven-year veteran, was unhurt.
The Sheriff’s Office said the man killed was Matthew Clowers, 32. Clowers had served 10 years in prison for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and armed robbery in Pima County.
The injured man was identified as Adam Chavez, 23. He spent time in prison for endangerment and theft, the Sheriff’s Office said.
