Tucson police were investigating an apparent accidental shooting involving two teens Wednesday in a desert area near a Rita Ranch neighborhood.

Two 16-year-old boys were in the desert near the 9800 block of East Bainbridge Street, near East Rita and South Houghton roads, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

One teen had a gun and the gun accidentally went off, a bullet striking the other teen in the head, Widmer said.

The injured teen, who suffered non-life threatening injuries, approached a man who was in his front yard in the neighborhood shortly after 11 a.m., and told the man he had been shot, Widmer said. The man called 911.

Tucson Fire Department paramedics treated the teen before taking him to a hospital, said Capt. Barrett Baker, a Tucson Fire spokesman.

Baker said late Wednesday that he did not know the condition of the teen.

Aggravated assault detectives were at the scene investigating the shooting, Widmer said.

Desert Sky Middle School, 9850 E. Rankin Loop, in the Vail Unified School District was temporarily put on lockdown during the initial investigation, said Widmer.
