A man robbed a bank inside a midtown supermarket late Thursday afternoon, police said.

The robber walked into the Safeway at East Broadway and Campbell Avenue and headed to the US Bank counter inside, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

The man handed the teller a note that demanded money and threatened harm, saying a bomb was left in the store. He fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

Store employees found a suspicious package inside the store after detectives left and called 911 again before evacuating the store.

Police later determined the package was non-explosive. The store reopened after 7 p.m.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
