A 3-year-old Sahuarita boy died Friday night after he found a gun and shot himself.

At about 7:45 p.m. police were called to a home in the 300 block of Calle Minerva near Interstate 19 and North Abrego Drive.

The boy had found his father’s gun in the family home and shot himself in the face. He was pronounced dead at the scene, said Officer Philip Steele, spokesman for the Sahuarita Police Department.

“The firearm was reported to be inadvertently misplaced for a short while and found by the child,” Steele said.

The gun was a large caliber model similar to what law enforcement officers’ use, Steele said. It did not have a safety latch.

There was one other child in the house at the time of the shooting, but Steele did not know where the second child was in the house.

Steele said the shooting was accidental. No one has been charged.
