An I-beam from the World Trade Center wreckage will be the centerpiece of a 9/11 memorial in Sierra Vista and city leaders are seeking sponsors to fund the project.

The 72-pound steel beam was acquired by the Sierra Vista Fire Department, Judy Hector, a spokeswoman for the city of Sierra Vista, said in a news release.

“When completed, the artifact will be surrounded by 3,000 stainless steel butterflies rising into the sky, each representing a life lost in this national tragedy,” she said.

The city is looking for sponsors willing to donate $20 for each butterfly. So far about 300 people have sponsored butterflies.

The design for the memorial was the combined effort of sculptor Brian Donahue and landscape architects Beverly Wilson and Dara Widner. The city plans to add benches and shade trees to the area surrounding the memorial, which will be located in the front courtyard of Sierra Vista Fire Station No. 3.

Donations can be made by phone, mail or in person:

— Call Patti Cluff at 520-417-4400 to donate using a credit card.

— Hand deliver cash or a check to Fire Station No. 3 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.

— A check, made payable to City of Sierra Vista, and noted it is for the 9/11 memorial, can be mailed to Fire Station No. 3,

675 Giulio Cesare Ave., Sierra Vista, AZ 85635.

Sponsors will receive a certificate acknowledging their tax-deductible contribution.
