Two Sierra Vista men are facing multiple charges for trying to steal change from a couple of soda machines.

Victor Smith, 21, and Calvin Smith, 20, (no relation) both of Sierra Vista, were arrested by Sierra Vista police officers around 7 a.m. Feb. 8 after trying to open a soda machine in the common area of an apartment complex in the 400 block of South Carmichael Avenue, Cpl. Scott Borgstadt, spokesman for the SVPD, said in a press release.

The police department received several calls from witnesses who saw three people in the area and heard loud banging noises.

When officers arrived at the complex, they saw two men jump a wall and run down an alley. One of the officers chased the men down on foot and arrested them.

Officers found burglary tools, including a drill, in a backpack Calvin Smith was carrying when he was arrested. The suspect had metal shavings on his clothes and shoes consistent with the burglarized machines, Borgstadt said. He was charged with burglary, criminal trespass and possession of burglary tools.

His suspected accomplice, Victor Smith, was charged with burglary and criminal trespass.

Both were booked into the Cochise County jail.

It is unclear whether a third person was involved so the case remains under investigation, Borgstadt said.
