The University of Arizona has released the name of the student who fell to his death this morning while climbing a 20-foot tower on the roof of a dorm.

Michael Evan Anderson, a 19-year-old freshman from Mission Viejo, Calif., and another student were climbing atop the Colonia de la Paz residence hall, 602 N. Highland Ave., just before 4 a.m. when Anderson fell, said Sgt. Filbert Barrera, spokesman for UAPD. The tower houses a swamp cooler.

Anderson was already dead when UA police officers and Tucson Fire Department personnel arrived at the dorm, Barrera said.

An autopsy will determine if drugs or alcohol were factors in the mishap, he said.

The roof of the building, secured by a padlocked entrance, was not easily accessible, Barrrera said. It's possible climb from a part of the building to access the roof area, he said.

“Somebody definitely gave a lot of thought to how they were going to get up there,” he said.

The other student who was climbing the tower was uninjured.
