A man from Mexico was arrested in Pima County, suspected of smuggling drugs with his young son in the SUV.

Deputies stopped an Isuzu Rodeo for speeding Thursday morning, along Interstate 10 and Avra Valley Road. The driver, Saul Estrella-Lizarraga, 35, of Nogales, Sonora, told deputies he and his 9-year-old son were headed for Phoenix, according to a news release from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

Estrella-Lizarraga allowed deputies to search the SUV and they found a concealed compartment containing more than 15 pounds of hard drugs — 7.5 pounds of heroin, 5 pounds of cocaine and 3.3 pounds of methamphetamine.

Estrella-Lizarraga was booked into the Pima County jail and faces six counts of narcotics drug violations and one count of child abuse.

The boy was released into the custody of his mother.
