A body was found in a manhole by crews from Tucson Electric Power on Tucson's east-side shortly before noon Monday.

Crews were working near Tanque Verde Road and Tanque Verde Loop and found the body when they opened the manhole, said Deputy Tracy Suitt, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Deputies responded at 11:50 a.m. to a report of a deceased person found in an underground electrical pull box, said Chief Deputy Chris Nanos in a news release Monday night.

The body was found when TEP crews were conducting a follow-up on a recent power outage, Nanos said.

Deputies observed the body lying next to a pair of bolt cutters, said Nanos.

It's unknown how long the body was there, but the last time the manhole was opened was in 2009, Suitt said.

Homicide detectives were conducting an investigation.

After the investigation is completed, the body will be retrieved by search and rescue deputies, said Nanos.
