An eastside resident kept his cool and survived unscathed Friday morning when a stranger walked into his home through an unlocked door.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at about 7:15 a.m. of a disturbance at a Walgreens drug store 7800 block of East Snyder Road, near North Sabino Canyon Road.

“When deputies arrived, they were informed that the suspect had just left the scene in a vehicle,” Deputy Jesus Bañuelos, spokesman for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, said in a news release. “The deputies immediately started a coordinated search of the area.”

A few minutes later, deputies received a call about a burglary at a home in the 7000 block of East Arrowhead Drive in the area of North Sabino Canyon and East Tanque Verde roads.

“They were advised that the homeowner locked himself in his room and called 911,” Bañuelos said. “They later learned that the intruder kicked in the victim’s bedroom door and had an odd conversation with him before fleeing from the home.

“He appeared to be in an altered state of mind during the encounter and had some type of drug in his system.”

Deputies searched the area and found the suspect, Gerald W. Archuleta, 33, in a nearby fenced yard. He was apprehended with the help of a sheriff’s department K-9.

Archuleta was taken to a local hospital for an exam before being booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of first degree criminal trespassing and criminal damage.
