A man was killed and a woman was injured during a confrontation with two officers Wednesday night at a midtown apartment, Tucson police say.

Officers were called to the apartment complex at 3810 E. Monte Vista Drive by the manager who had called 911 to report that people were inside a unit where the renters had been evicted, according to a news release.

Two officers arrived at the complex near East Glenn Street and North Alvernon Way about 11:15 p.m. and went inside after no one answered the unlocked front door. The officers were confronted by a man carrying a hockey stick when they knocked on a closed bedroom door, the release said.

Officers opened fire on the man then quickly realized a woman in the bedroom had also been struck by the gunfire.

Both were taken to University of Arizona Medical Center, where the man was pronounced dead. The woman is said to have non life-threatening wounds.

The officers were uninjured.

The incident is still being investigated.
