A passenger was killed and two drivers were injured Thursday morning in a southside car wreck that ended with a vehicle crashing through a block wall, a police official said.

The crash happened at about 9:15 a.m. near South Tucson Boulevard and East Drexel Road. It involved a moving truck and a 1980 Nissan pickup truck, Sgt. Chris Widmer, spokesman for the Tucson Police Department, said.

Investigators determined that the moving truck was southbound on Tucson Boulevard and entered the intersection on a green light, Widmer said. The collision occurred when the Nissan, which was westbound on Drexel, ran a red light.

After the crash, the moving truck continued through the intersection crashing through a block wall on the northwest side of the street and stopping between two houses, Widmer said. Both houses suffered structural damage. No one inside the houses was injured.

A 22-year-old woman riding in the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene, Widmer said. The 33-year-old man driving of the Nissan was taken to a local hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The 32-year-old man driving the moving truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

“Traffic detectives are … investigating the possibility of impairment of the driver of pickup truck,” Widmer said.

The investigation is ongoing. The name of the woman who died will not be released until her next-of-kin have been notified, Widmer said.
