A 23-year-old man was killed early Thursday morning when he stepped in front of a tractor-trailer hauling gravel on the northwest side, a sheriff’s official said.

At about 5 a.m. Shane Edward Rivera was walking along West Avra Valley Road just west of Interstate 10 “when he suddenly stepped into the roadway and was hit by the semi truck,” according to a news release from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

The truck driver stayed at the scene and several passersby tried to render aid to the man who was later declared dead at the crash site.

Avra Valley Road was closed for several hours.
