A woman who said her brakes failed jumped from her moving vehicle before the SUV crashed into a house Friday.

The incident occurred at about 12:40 p.m., as the 25-year-old woman was driving in a neighborhood between West River Road and North Oracle Jaynes Station Road, said Capt. Adam Goldberg, spokesman for the Northwest Fire District.

“She had indicated to paramedics that she was leaving the neighborhood toward River Road. She stated she lost her brakes on the vehicle, which caused her to lose control. She made the decision to jump from the moving vehicle right at that intersection where bystanders found her lying in the roadway.”

Her older model Ford Explorer continued east, veered into the front yard of a home in the 5300 block of West Waterleaf Drive and crashed into the garage with such force that the air bags deployed, Goldberg said.

The woman suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

No one was in the home, but because of damage to a load-bearing wall and risk of collapse, gas and electricity were turned off to the house.

“The house is uninhabitable until repairs are made. The damage to the vehicle was minimal compared to the damage to the house,” Goldberg said.

“In a crisis situation it’s very important that somebody doesn’t panic. Emergency decisions in a panic situation are very difficult to make. When you are under stress you may not be thinking very clearly. It is very hard for us to second-guess what decision a person makes,” said Goldberg.

Detectives with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department are “investigating the possibility of mechanical failure,” said Deputy Jesus Bañuelos, a department spokesman. No citations have been issued.
