The House Majority PAC, a super PAC associated with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, has bought at least $365,000 in "non-candidate issue ads" slated to start running this morning in Tucson and the Phoenix markets.
The two ads focus on Republican congressional candidates Martha McSally and Andy Tobin and come just two weeks after the Koch brothers-backed LIBRE Initiative ads targeted their Democratic rivals, incumbents Rep. Ron Barber and Ann Kirkpatrick.
Matt Thornton, a spokesperson for the House Majority PAC, said the new ads are in direct response to the recent ads.
“There is no doubt who the Koch brothers want in control of Congress: people who will support their extreme agenda, not stand up for working people,” said Thornton. “Arizonans have a right to know about the Koch brothers’ hidden agenda and why they support certain candidates.”
An ad buy with local ABC affiliate KGUN suggests House Majority PAC will spend roughly $115,000 on the ad below, which will run on several Tucson television stations for the next two weeks.
Filings with Phoenix-based NBC affiliate KPNX lists a total of five channels (KPHO, KSAZ, KTVK, KNXV and KUTP) which will run the ad (below) attacking Tobin in the Valley.
The PAC is expected to spend at least $250,000 to air the ad for the next two weeks.
The PAC has been active in Arizona this year, spending $94,719 on ads in the Tucson market in January criticizing Republican congressional candidate Martha McSally’s ties to the billionaire Koch brothers.
Another ad from the group, released around the same time, touted the accomplishments of CD1 Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick. It spent $61,666 on ads, airing in the Phoenix market.
Daniel Scarpinato, a spokesperson for National Republican Congressional Committee, said the ads are cover up the Democratic incumbents voting record.
"Ron Barber and Ann Kirkpatrick are clearly freaking out that they are losing their reelection campaigns and have begged Nancy Pelosi to come in and attempt to save the day with deceitful television ads," Scarpinato said. "Sadly for them, all the slick ads and all the money in the universe can’t hide Barber and Kirkpatrick’s continued support for job-destroying policies like Obamacare from Arizona voters."
Daniel Garza, the executive director of the LIBRE Initiative, said the PAC associated with Pelosi has previously has had similar ads debunked by the Washington Post.
“It’s shameful that even after independent fact checkers gave Nancy Pelosi’s PAC '3 Pinocchios' for its deceptive attack ads, they are recycling the same debunked falsehoods. This is sheer desperation," he said.
