Tucson State Senator Olivia Cajero Bedford told another state senator and fellow Democrat, Steve Gallardo, that he should “act more gay,” the Arizona Capitol Times is reporting.

Gallardo described a closed-door discussion of Senate democratic caucus, with Bedford arguing Gallardo should step down from his leadership position while he is running for Congress.

She later attempted to strip him of his leadership position, but failed to get a majority of peers to back her motion.

“She said that I should be more gay and she questioned my integrity. She said she was glad I came out (of the closet), but that I should be more gay,” Gallardo told the newspaper.  “I’m more offended that she questioned my integrity.”

The Tucson Democrat confirmed she told Gallardo, who recently announced he was gay, to act more gay.

She defended her statement, saying it was an attempt at humor.
