Sahuarita police officers shot and killed an armed man Saturday night after a slow-speed pursuit, according to the Sahuarita Police Department.

Officers said they began following Richard T. Herrera Jr., 29, after responding to a domestic-violence call shortly after 11 p.m. in the 100 block of East Placita Lago del Encanto.

Herrera was seen fleeing the address in a car as police entered the neighborhood, a police news release said.

After Herrera failed to yield to a traffic stop, officers pursued the southbound vehicle for 5 miles, attempting to stop it with spike strips, before Herrera slowed to a stop on West Calle Plaza.

Officers gave Herrera verbal commands to raise his hands. Herrera raised a 9mm pistol and fired at least one shot while sitting in the vehicle, the release said. He then pointed the gun at officers, according to the release, at which time officers opened fire, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation of the original assault call revealed Herrera had reportedly been drinking and was heavily intoxicated, the release said.

The officers involved in the shooting were Officer Kevin Bender, Sergeant Michael Falquez and Officer Aaron Medina.
