University of Arizona

Dedication event set for 'Newsboy' statue

The University of Arizona Library is the recipient of "The Newsboy," a life-size sculpture donated to the UA libraries by UA alumni Linda and David Turner.

A dedication reception will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Main Library, 1510 E. University Blvd.

The bronze sculpture, by artist James Muir, features a newsboy hawking a newspaper with the headline "Truth."

For the Turners, the message echoes a fundamental library principle of ensuring free and equitable access to information - an essential part of democratic society.

The 200-pound sculpture is valued at $35,000. The work is permanently mounted on the northwest side of the Main Library entrance. It is one of 12 editions of the sculpture that the Sedona-based artist produced in 1994.

Marana

Habitat, 2nd group starting new home

Habitat for Humanity Tucson will begin building its second home in Marana in collaboration with a group called Catholic Daughters.

The group is a national organization of Catholic women.

The house will be completed in about eight to 10 months, and it's designated for the Pottenger family.

Harumi Pottenger, a single mother, has six children, ages 9 to 19.

Pottenger will complete 200 hours of helping to build the home, a basic tenet of Habitat for Humanity. The family will repay a no-interest mortgage over 25 years.

Catholic Daughters donated $85,000 to build the home, and the lot was provided through a partnership with the town of Marana.
