One person is dead, and another is in critical condition after a two-car crash tonight on Interstate 10 near downtown, authorities said.

The crash happened about 8:30 p.m. on eastbound I-10 near Congress Street when a car driving the wrong way collided with another car, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

A bystander reportedly pulled a woman from a car that was on fire before firefighters arrived, said Capt. Trish Tracy, a Tucson Fire Department spokeswoman.

She was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, along with a man in the other car who was ejected from the vehicle and also suffered life-threatening injuries, Tracy said.

One died at the hospital.

The crash snarled traffic in the area and forced authorities to close the eastbound on-ramp at Speedway, DPS said.
