Five people were killed Saturday when an SUV being chased by Border Patrol agents crashed southeast of Tucson, officials said.
The rollover wreck happened around 11 p.m. at Interstate 10 and Arizona 83, the Department of Public Safety said.
A spokesman for Customs and Border Protection said agents tried to stop the Chevrolet Tahoe, but when the driver failed to yield and tried to exit onto Highway 83, the vehicle rolled.
DPS officials said there were 20 people in the SUV. Five people were declared dead at the scene, and 15 were taken to Tucson hospitals with minor to serious injuries, DPS said. Information on the group's immigration status was not available Sunday.
The dead included a man from Mexico and four men from Guatemala, said Oscar de la Torre, the Mexican consul in Douglas. "We are working with the Mexican Consulate in Tucson and U.S. authorities to learn more about the incident," he said.
