• “The story behind Grand Canyon University story” on A10 Monday incorrectly stated the reason for protests over El Rio Golf Course in the early 1970s. The course existed for decades, including a period as a segregated, whites-only private country club. Neighbors insisted City Council candidates had promised to convert it to a park after their election in 1968. The city’s decision to keep it a golf course sparked protests that lasted for weeks, including a sit-in on the course, until the city agreed to build what is now Joaquin Murrieta Park, 1400 N. Silverbell Road, and the El Rio Neighborhood Center, 1390 W. Speedway, next to the golf course.
