A Mexican national was arrested Friday on suspicion of trying to smuggle more than $100,000 in unreported U.S. currency into Mexico by hiding it in a cooler.

Gamaliel Gonzales de Dios, 54, of Nayarit, Mexico, was traveling through the Dennis DeConcini Port in Nogales, Ariz.

Customs and Border Protection officers and Border Patrol agents selected Gonzales de Dios for a secondary inspection after he declared $1,000 in U.S. currency. Officers counted the money and found it was $1,893.

Officers then found 23 packages containing an additional $105,000 in cash concealed in a cooler he was carrying.

The cash was seized and Gonzales de Dios was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
