A man was convicted of repeatedly molesting a relative over the course of nearly a decade and sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday.

Pima County Superior Court Judge Deborah Bernini sentenced David Soto Cecena, who was found guilty of continuous sexual abuse of a child in September 2010.

Cecena fled to Mexico before the trial started in 2010.

Deputy Pima County Attorney Frances Kreamer Hope said the abuse the victim suffered was nearly constant.

She also noted Cecena remarried when he fled to Mexico, "somewhat disturbingly" to a woman who has young children.

Cecena's attorney, Lance Wood, asked the judge for some leniency because his client was remorseful and had turned himself in to police to confess the abuse.

After completing his sentence, Cecena could be deported to Mexico.
