A Pima County Sheriff's Department deputy was shot in the leg Saturday during a fight that ended with the fatal shooting of the gunman, officials said Sunday.

Deputy Jesus Davila answered a call about a person with a gun outside the Circle K store at 4392 N. Romero Road about 11 p.m. Deputy Tracy Suitt said in a news release.

Davila encountered Alvin McBride, 41, outside the store and their confrontation escalated into a fight.

McBride shot Davila in the leg, but the deputy was able to draw his own weapon and fatally shot McBride, Suitt said.

McBride was pronounced dead at the scene.

Davila, a deputy since 2007, was taken to a hospital and released Sunday, Suitt said. He is on paid administrative leave, which is customary in officer-involved shootings.
