A former high-school wrestling coach convicted of having sex with a 15-year-old student was sentenced to 3¾ years in prison this week.

Richard Portugal Ortiz was found guilty at trial in June on four counts of sexual conduct with a minor.

Pima County Superior Court Judge Javier Chon-Lopez sentenced Ortiz, 55, to consecutive terms of imprisonment on three of the four convictions.

Ortiz was a wrestling coach at Tucson High Magnet School where his female victim was a student and member of the girls wrestling team.

At trial, the victim testified Ortiz had previously coached her older brother and was someone her family liked and trusted.

She said Ortiz appeared to take special interest in her often planning special training and workout sessions on weekends.

The Arizona Daily Star did not identify the victim, who is minor.

Ortiz was arrested in June 2012 when sheriff’s deputies found him and the victim partially undressed in the back of his van parked on a far southwest side residential street.

Ortiz initially told police he had met the victim at the casino that night and that she was 18-years old.
