A fire early Monday caused heavy damage to a midtown bar, officials said.

A Tucson police officer on patrol about 12:40 a.m. was the first to report smoke in the area of South Alvernon Way and East 29th Street. Tucson Fire Department crews were dispatched, though the exact source of the smoke was not immediately known, Capt. Barrett Baker said in a news release.

Alfie's Pub, 3940 E. 29th St., was eventually identified as the source of the smoke. It took firefighters about 16 minutes to control the blaze.

Smoke damage to the interior of the building was so severe that the structure was condemned, Baker said.

The cause of the blaze and the amount of damage to the pub were not available Monday.
