Two women were injured Tuesday night when a suspected drunken driver fleeing from a deputy smashed into their car on Tucson's west side, officials say.

The incident started about 9 p.m. when a deputy looking for a reported impaired driver stopped a pickup truck driving without lights on and in the wrong lane on West Speedway near North Painted Hills Road, Deputy Tracy Suitt said in a news release.

Shortly after being stopped, the driver Alfonso Gutierrez Mateo, 34, got back into the truck and sped off, driving east in the westbound lane of Speedway, Suitt said in the release.

The deputy gave chase and about 1.5 miles later, the pickup truck smashed into a car.

Two women in the car — both in their mid 20's — were injured. One of them remained in critical condition today, Suitt said.

Gutierrez and the other woman were hospitalized with less severe injuries.

Suitt says Gutierrez is likely to be booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of aggravated driving under the influence, fleeing from police, criminal damage and other crimes.
