Tucson woman charged in false bomb report

A 46-year-old Tucson woman is facing a felony charge in connection with a bomb hoax that led to a large evacuation Thursday in midtown.

A charter school, a behavioral health center and other businesses were evacuated after a suspicious backpack was reported in a parking lot. One of the 911 calls was from a woman who claimed the bag contained a bomb, Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson police spokesman, said in a news release Friday.

An ordnance team used a device to tear open the backpack, which contained clothing and personal belongings.

Esther Bergin, who police say was the 911 caller making the false report, was booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of making a hoax claim to police, a felony.

Two people trying to smuggle drugs inside their underwear were arrested by border officers this week in separate incidents.

On Wednesday afternoon agents say they found a pound of methamphetamine inside the underpants of an 18-year-old U.S. citizen who was riding in a border shuttle van stopped for an inspection at a checkpoint on Interstate 19 near Amado, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a news release.

On Thursday night a 23-year-old U.S. citizen was arrested at the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales after officers say they found 4 pounds of heroin in her bra.

The combined estimated street value of the narcotics is $70,000, the release said.
