Bicyclist killed was Sun Tran driver
A bicyclist struck and killed early Thursday morning in a south-side hit-and- run was a longtime bus driver at Sun Tran.
John Akers, 64, had worked for the city since May 1974, said Michele Joseph, a Sun Tran spokeswoman.
Akers was riding his bicycle to work at about 3:30 a.m. when he was struck and killed at the intersection of West Irvington and South Mission roads, by a car that left the scene, said Deputy Jesus Bañuelos, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman.
Witnesses provided a description of the vehicle and deputies found it hours later on the northwest side. A man was arrested on an unrelated misdemeanor DUI warrant, Bañuelos said. His name was not released.
Detectives also interviewed a second man, who is not in custody, in the hit-and-run, Bañuelos said. The investigation continues, and detectives will meet with the County Attorney's Office to determine appropriate charges, he said.
3 held after running from traffic stop
Three men are in custody after a traffic stop that led to a brief foot chase in which one of the men fell, discharging his gun, prompting a deputy to fire his weapon Wednesday night, authorities said.
No one was injured by the gunfire, said Deputy Jesus Bañuelos, a Sheriff's Department spokesman.
The names and charges facing the men arrested will be released today, he said. The incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. in the Walgreens parking lot at West River and North Flowing Wells roads.
One of the men was injured when he resisted arrest, and was treated at a hospital and released before being put into deputies' custody, Bañuelos said.
