Douglas man is held on pot charge at port

A Douglas man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of attempting to smuggle $127,000 worth of marijuana at the Douglas port of entry.

The 19-year-old man was detained after a drug-detecting dog alerted officers to the drugs in the man's Chevrolet truck, said U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.

During a search, officers found 37 packages of marijuana in the engine compartment and behind the seats. The marijuana, which weighed more than 250 pounds, and the truck were seized.

The man was turned over to officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.

Police want your help after bank-stickup try

Tucson police are seeking the public's help in identifying a man in connection with an attempted bank robbery Tuesday.

Police were dispatched at 2:32 p.m. to a report of the attempted robbery at Wells Fargo inside the Fry's supermarket at 2480 N. Swan Road, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a spokesman for the Tucson Police Department.

The man left before police arrived. No one was hurt, Widmer said.

Robbery detectives learned that the man had shopped for food at Fry's before entering Wells Fargo.

The man walked up to the counter, placed a paper bag on it and said it was a bomb, Widmer said.

He then demanded money from tellers but left the store before receiving any cash. The man left the bag on the counter, said Widmer.

The man, who was caught on surveillance cameras, was last seen heading north from the store.

The object found in the bag was not a bomb, said Widmer.

The man is believed to be in his mid-30s. He is about 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighs about 175 pounds.

He was wearing a dark blue long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans and a fisherman's hat.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
