Body found in desert on Tucson's east side

A man's body was found Wednesday morning in a desert area on the east side.

A utility worker found the body near South Craycroft and East Golf Links roads, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, spokesman for the Tucson Police Department.

Investigators estimate the man had been dead about a week, but his identity and cause of death are unknown, Widmer said.

No further information was available.

Group of border crossers rescued, but one man dies

Border Patrol agents and Pinal County sheriff's deputies rescued several illegal immigrants who had been walking in the desert for about six days with little food or water.

One of the men was found dead after the group was able to call 911 for help on Friday afternoon. The men were found near Interstate 10 and Red Rock, north of Marana.

After the distress call, agents in a helicopter found five men under a tree. One of the men, about 20 years old, was dead, according to a Pinal sheriff's news release.

The others said they had been walking from the border for about six days. They said the man who died had complained of the heat and being tired.

A smuggler who was guiding the men as part of a larger group told them to rest and he would return. He left with the remainder of the group but never returned, the men said.

The surviving men were turned over to the Border Patrol.
