A 68-year-old man accused of attacking his estranged wife with a large folding knife was sentenced in Pima County Superior Court to nine years in prison.

Jerry William Cole, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in February in connection with the June 3 attack.

The couple had been married for 42 years and were in the process of divorcing when the attack happened.

Cole's estranged wife was moving personal items out of their house with two friends and when she went to give Cole a goodbye hug, he grabbed her neck, swung her around, pulled out the knife and began attacking, court documents said.

The woman was cut on her throat, cheek and wrist, according to court records.

Cole was sentenced Monday by Judge Casey McGinley.
