A man shot and killed by a Sierra Vista police officer during a traffic stop Sunday was identified as Lauro Jesus Avechuco, officials said.

The shooting occurred about 11 p.m. when Officer Justin Dannels tried to stop a car on Arizona 92 near Golden Acres, Cpl. Scott Borgstadt, said in a news release.

After stopping briefly, Avechuco, 40, of Sierra Vista, sped off in the 3900 block of Mahonia Place. Dannels fired several rounds at the car after Avechuco drove toward him.

Avechuco was fatally wounded. A passenger ran away and has not been located, Borgstadt said.

Dannels, a two-year veteran of the police department, is the son of Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels, Borgstadt said.

Commander Adam Thrasher was quoted in the news release as saying: "The officer involved was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy regarding officer involved shootings, while a joint investigation is being conducted with the Sierra Vista Police Department, the Cochise County Sheriff's Office and Federal Bureau of Investigation."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Justin Butler at 520-452-7500.
