The mother of an infant boy who died Monday was arrested in connection with his death.
Katherine Fitzgerald, 20, is facing a charge of child abuse, and was booked into the Pima County jail Tuesday, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
Detectives say Fitzgerald was aware that her 2-month-old son, Mavrik Riggin, was in need of medical attention in the weeks prior to his death, but failed to seek it for her son, said Widmer.
The boy's father, Fayde Riggin, 22, was charged Monday with first-degree murder and child abuse in the infant's death, and was booked into jail, Widmer said.
On Aug. 12, police were called to the 1200 block of South Turquoise Vista, south of East 22nd Street and east of South Kolb Road, for a report of an unresponsive infant boy, Widmer said. The child was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Widmer said the hospital later contacted police and told them the injuries to the child were nonaccidental.
During the investigation, detectives found out that the boy's father had recently moved back into the home with the mother and the baby.
Investigators said the father grew frustrated with the baby and shook him several times over the course of a month, Widmer said.
Mavrik sustained serious internal injuries from being shaken, said Widmer.
