SAN SIMON — Authorities in southern Arizona are trying to determine if a man who fatally shot himself is connected to criminal activity in the Tucson area.

The 54-year-old man is either from California or Canada and they’re withholding his name until his relatives can be notified, Cochise County Sheriff’s officials say.

A deputy on patrol Thursday in the San Simon area spotted what appeared to be an abandoned vehicle off a frontage road off Interstate 10.

The deputy approached the vehicle with Canadian license plates and saw a man in the driver’s seat who acted nervous.

Asked for identification, the man reportedly sped off and later stopped and fatally shot himself under the chin.

Authorities searched the vehicle and found firearms, ammunition, cash, a ski mask, binoculars, gloves, a wig and makeup.
