A man whose gun went off when he tripped and fell fleeing from deputies, is now facing multiple charges.

Tyler James Dahlstrom, 24, and two other people were arrested Wednesday night after they tried to flee from a traffic stop, said Deputy Jesus Bañuelos, a Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

Deputies tried to make a traffic stop at about 9:15 p.m. and followed two men as they pulled into a parking lot at West River Road and North Flowing Wells Road. Once stopped, the two men bolted from their car and got into another in the parking lot driven by a friend, Bañuelos said.

When deputies stopped the second car as it attempted to leave the parking lot, Dahlstrom jumped out of the car and ran.

After a brief foot chase, Dahlstrom tripped and fell, discharging the gun he was carrying, Bañuelos said. Hearing the gunshot, deputies drew their service weapons and one deputy fired a shot. Dahlstrom was arrested after a brief struggle. Though he had not been shot, Dahlstrom was injured when he resisted arrest, so deputies took him to a hospital “for precautionary reasons” where he was treated and released into the custody of deputies, Bañuelos said.

A witness, Nick Whalen, said he saw a deputy following a vehicle that was traveling east on River Road.

The vehicle pulled into a parking lot near Walgreens and a man climbed out of the vehicle and ran, said Whalen.

The man fell down and rolled over. “It looked like the guy was going to pull something from his waist,” said Whalen.

He said he heard two shots fired.

Dahlstrom was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault on a peace officer, prohibited possessor of a firearm and failure to appear on a warrant.

Also arrested were: Daniell Lynn Nicolino, 21, who was arrested on suspicion of failure to appear on a warrant and a probation violation; and Edgar Olson, 23, who was arrested on suspicion of possession/use of a weapon in a drug offense and prohibited possessor of a firearm.

The investigation is ongoing, Bañuelos said.
