The crash Sunday night demolished this pickup truck, which was carrying a family. The driver was killed.

A man and a 2-year-old boy were killed Sunday night in a two-vehicle crash in Rio Rico.

Abraham Alonso Cardenas, 33, and Julian Danzel Lopez were pronounced dead at the scene of the 8:30 p.m. collision at Pendleton Drive and the Sonoita Creek Wash, said Lt. Raoul Rodriguez, a Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Deputies said Cardenas was driving a red 2006 Ford F-150 truck south on Pendleton Drive, and when he entered the Sonoita Creek Wash, Cardenas lost control and crashed into a 2002 Ford Explorer headed north on Pendleton Drive.

Cardenas' family - his wife, Suzette Arlette Cardenas, 28; and their children, Abraham Alonso Cardenas Jr., 7; Kamila Sofia Cardenas, 4; and Oliver Alan Cardenas, 9 months old - were taken to Holy Cross Hospital in Nogales, Rodriguez said.

Their conditions were not available Monday night.

Karla Lopez, 25, the driver of the Ford Explorer, was flown by helicopter to University of Arizona Medical Center-University Campus, where she was in critical condition, Rodriguez said.

Lopez's daughter, Briana N. Lopez, 5, was believed to have been taken to Holy Cross Hospital, Rodriguez said.

Lopez's 2-year-old son, Julian, was killed when he was thrown from the vehicle, Rodriguez said.

Rio Rico is about 50 miles south of Tucson and just north of Nogales.
