A Rio Rico man was shot in an apparent domestic violence incident Monday morning.

Deputies from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department responded to a shooting in the 500 block of Camino Kansas in Rio Rico shortly before noon and found a 35-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, said Sheriff Tony Estrada.

Information from witnesses indicates the man was abusing his girlfriend and was shot by her 20-year-old son in an effort to protect her, Estrada said.

The 35-year-old victim was taken by helicopter to a Tucson hospital.

The extent of his injuries is unknown, but he was alert and conscious when he was taken to the hospital, Estrada said.

Deputies are continuing the investigation and have obtained a search warrant for the house.

Deputies have not yet determined whether the suspected shooter will be arrested, Estrada said.
