The principal of Sahuaro High School was arrested Tuesday afternoon on a misdemeanor assault charge for an incident involving the 16-year-old boyfriend of his stepdaughter.
Christopher Bonn, 40, was cited and released, said Maria Hawke, a spokeswoman for the Tucson Police Department.
Bonn discovered his stepdaughter snuck out of the house sometime late Sunday night or early Monday morning and waited for her to return home, Hawke said.
He saw the pair park near his home around 4 a.m. and waited for them to come out of the car and when they didn't he walked up to the vehicle, Hawke said.
Bonn said he thought he saw the boy reaching for something in the center console and thought he could be pulling out a gun, so he punched him to prevent him from doing so, Hawke said.
The boy said that Bonn opened the door and was yelling and struck him without being provoked, Hawke said.
Bonn has been "assigned to home," while the Tucson Unified School District reviews the incident to determine appropriate action, Cara Rene, a district spokeswoman, said in a written statement.
"The protection of our students is a priority for TUSD and any behavior that threatens that protection is completely inappropriate and unacceptable," the statement said. "While the altercation was an off-duty incident that occurred outside of any TUSD property, the district is taking this measure to ensure our students are safe at school."
