A Sells man convicted of stabbing a man to death in 2011 was sentenced to 6½ years in prison in federal court Monday.

Alrick Michael Escalante, 21, of the Tohono O’odham Nation, was sentenced after a guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter.

U.S. District Judge David C. Bury sentenced Escalante for killing Michael Conrad Lopez, 22.

He was originally charged with first-degree murder.

Escalante’s attorney filed a sentencing memorandum saying his client acted out of fear for his safety when he stabbed Lopez.

The report said both the defendant and victim had gang ties.
