A 43-year-old Sierra Vista man was arrested during a traffic stop after a police dog alerted officers to drugs in the man's car, authorities said.

Carl Schaffnit Jr. was booked into the Cochise County jail Friday and is facing charges including possession of a dangerous drug for sale, possession of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and use of a wireless communication in the commission of a drug offense, said Carol Capas, a Cochise County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.

Schaffnit remains in custody in lieu of $175,000 bail.

Deputies and Sierra Vista Police officers, who also assisted in the traffic stop at North Garden Avenue and Taylor Drive, recovered about $3,000 in cash, methamphetamine, heroin, a scale and other items consistent with illegal narcotics sales, Capas said.

K-9 Deputy Vinny, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois, has been with the sheriff's department for more than four years, said Capas.
