Tucson police have released the name of the suicidal woman shot and killed by officers Saturday.

Renee Witham, 24, was shot when she pulled a handgun on three officers, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, spokesman for the Tucson Police Department.

Officers answered a 911 call at about 1:15 a.m. from Witham, who said she had a gun and intended to kill herself, Widmer said. She was calling from a home in the 2600 block of East Silver Street near East Grant Road and North Tucson Boulevard, and told the dispatcher other people were with her in the house.

Officers John Malovich, Alex Samorano and Jesus Maldonado were the first to arrive at the home and saw a man and a woman standing outside the front door.

When the officers approached the home, Witham pulled a handgun from a holster she was wearing and raised the firearm, Widmer said. After giving several commands to drop the gun, officers opened fire, striking Witham and the man who was standing next to her.

Witham died at a hospital. The 27-year-old man suffered a non-life-threatening wound to his arm, Widmer said.
