A teenager has died from injuries he sustained in a May 27 two-vehicle crash near Davis-Monthan AIr Force Base.

Jeremy Echeandia, 17, died Sunday at University of Arizona Medical Center, said Sgt. Maria Hawke, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.

On May 27 at 9:27 p.m., police were dispatched to a crash in the 5000 block of East Golf Links Road, near South Craycroft Road, Hawke said.

The drivers and passen-gers of both vehicles suffered serious injuries and were taken by paramedics to the hospital.

Detectives from the traffic investigations unit found that a 2003 four-door Saturn sedan traveling west on Golf Links Road was making a lane change when another vehicle moved into the lane, Hawke said. The driver of the Saturn overcorrected and lost control, she said.

The Saturn crossed the median and crashed into an eastbound 1997 Dodge truck nearly head-on, Hawke said.

Echeandia was a front-seat passenger in the Saturn. It is unknown if he was wearing a seat belt, Hawke said.

No citations have been issued.

There have been 17 traffic-related fatalities since January in the city, the same number as at this time last year, Police Department statistics show.
