A 29-year-old man was arrested and is facing charges that he killed a 3-month-old infant being cared for by his live-in girlfriend.

Genaro Urbina was booked into the Pima County jail, originally on a charge of child abuse after Izayah Garcia was taken to a hospital on Monday with life threatening injuries, Sgt. Chris Widmer, a police spokesman, said in a news release.

Izayah died from those injuries on Thursday, Widmer said. Urbina is now facing an additional charge of second-degree murder.

On Monday morning, Tucson police and paramedics were called to a home in the 5900 block of South Woodcrest Drive in the Midvale Park area because of an unresponsive baby. The child was immediately taken to the hospital.

Hospital staff advised police that the baby had suffered non-accidental injuries, Widmer said.

Investigators determined that Izayah was being cared for by the adult daughter of the baby’s custodial guardians.

Early Monday, Izayah awoke crying and Urbina got out of bed to check on him, Widmer said. Detectives determined that the baby suffered injuries at the time Urbina was checking on him, Widmer said.

Urbina put the baby back in his crib and returned to bed. His girlfriend awoke around 6 a.m. and found Izayah unresponsive in his crib and she called 911.
