A man ran himself over early Thursday in a stunt gone awry.

Firefighters were called to a residence in the 1100 block of West Farr Street between West Prince Road and West Miracle Mile at about 3 a.m. and found a man pinned under the differential of an SUV parked in the driveway, said Capt. Barrett Baker, spokesman for the Tucson Fire Department.

Because the victim was unconscious, four firefighters and a Tucson police officer lifted the vehicle up while a firefighter and a police officer dragged the man out from under the SUV, Baker said.

The victim was "trying a stunt in which he was going to put the SUV in reverse, jump out and lay on the ground behind it, have the vehicle drive over him, and then get up and back to the SUV in time to stop it before it collided with anything," said Sgt. Maria Hawke, spokeswoman for the Tucson Police Department. "His plans were thwarted when the SUV stopped on top of him instead of rolling over him."

The man was in stable condition at a Tucson hospital, she said.
