Eric Jones

A man has been arrested in connection with the “unprovoked homicide” that occurred at a midtown bus stop on Monday, Tucson police said.

Police said Eric Jones, 21, is facing a first-degree murder charge in the afternoon shooting death of Robert Chance, 41, who was waiting at a bus stop at Broadway and Alvernon Way. Chance died later at the University of Arizona Medical Center.

Witnesses told police that the suspect and victim were the only two people at the bus stop. They then reported seeing the suspect fire a gun at the victim.

Jones was already in the Pima County jail when he was arrested on the murder charge, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson police spokesman.

Jones was arrested on Monday after being pulled over on Interstate 10 by a Department of Public Safety officer. The vehicle Jones was driving was reported stolen, police said.

That incident happened several hours after the shooting, but the officer who arrested Jones was unaware that he was a suspect in the earlier slaying.

A handgun found in the car Jones was driving has been linked to the bus-stop shooting, Widmer said.

Jones has a lengthy criminal history, which includes aggravated assault on police officers and a stabbing in downtown that left a person with serious injuries, Tucson police said.
