A 47-year old special-education teacher faces sexual conduct charges for having sex with a relative who is a minor, police said.

Christine Mazzarella, a teacher at Lineweaver Elementary School, was arrested Wednesday at her home by detectives with the child sexual assault unit, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

Mazzarella was booked into the Pima County jail on four counts of sexual conduct with a minor, Widmer said.

Widmer said there is no indication that Mazzarella was involved in sexual misconduct at Lineweaver, 461 S. Bryant Ave. The school is in a neighborhood south of East Broadway and west of South Columbus Boulevard.

Mazzarella began working full time for the district only at the beginning of the school year. Before then, she was employed in some temporary capacity, said Cara Rene, a Tucson Unified School District spokeswoman.

Mazzarella has been assigned to home and will not return to the school. “The alleged conduct that has been reported by Tucson police is grounds for dismissal from the district,” Rene said.

Earlier this month, detectives received information that Mazzarella was having sexual relations with a child, Widmer said.

Detectives said that Mazzarella had sexual contact with the child on multiple occasions in July 2013, Widmer said.
