A man who killed his mother and concealed her body in the bathroom of her apartment was sentenced to 10½ years in prison on Tuesday.

Pima County Superior Court Judge Scott Rash sentenced Christopher Ignacio Aguilar to prison on following a guilty plea to manslaughter.

Aguilar was originally accused of second-degree murder and concealment of a dead body in connection with the January 2012 death of Carmen Aguilar.

Christopher Aguilar, 28, told police investigating reports of a foul odor at his mother’s apartment that he found his mother in the bathtub already dead.

Neighbors told police the last time they saw her was around Jan. 8, 2012. She was discovered on Jan. 31. The medical examiner could not determine a specific cause of death, ruling her death a homicide by undetermined means.

Deputy Pima County Attorney Nicol Green argued the defendant likely killed his mother over a dispute about her ex-boyfriend.
