A woman and her boyfriend were arrested in connection with the woman's 1-year-old son suffering critical injuries, and neither seeking immediate help for the child, police say.

Bryan Barker, 29, is facing two counts of child abuse, and Diana Noncheva, 23, is facing one count of child abuse, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

Both were booked into the Pima County jail, Widmer said Tuesday.

On Monday, police were dispatched to a hospital for a report of a 1-year-old boy who had bruising on his head and body. The child was in critical condition, said Widmer.

The boy was brought to the hospital by Noncheva and Barker.

Detectives said the injuries to the boy occurred earlier Monday while the child was in the care of Barker at their residence in the 4800 block of East 29th Street, Widmer said.

The neighborhood is north of East Golf Links Road between South Swan  and South Craycroft roads.

Barker telephoned Noncheva and told her that he dropped the baby and the child was unresponsive. Noncheva came home after work and the boy was still not responding, Widmer said.

About one hour later, the two called a friend to pick them up and take them to the hospital, said Widmer.
